È mancato pochi mesi fa all'ospedale di Piacenza monsignor Michele Tosi, il più eminente storico del periodo medioevale della nostra zona. It failed a few months ago at Piacenza Monsignor Michael Tosi, the most eminent historian of the medieval period in our area.
Ordinato sacerdote a Bobbio nel 1955, era nato 64 anni fa a Gavadi , la frazione più elevata e remota del Comune di Santo Stefano d'Aveto, a quei tempi raggiungibile solo tramite una mulattiera e isolata per gran parte dell'anno. Gavadi non è propriamente quello che si dice "un centro di cultura": i suoi abitanti si dedicano in prevalenza all'agricoltura, all'allevamento del bestiame e alla produzione del formaggio, rinomato ben oltre i confini della valle. Queste attività richiedono sì una profonda "cultura", ma di quella contadina che si tramanda di padre in figlio e che non ha bisogno di testi, di documenti scritti o di maestri nel senso comune del termine. Anzi occorre dire ad onor del vero che i ragazzi di Gavadi sono sempre stati piuttosto diffidenti e refrattari nei confronti della scuola, spesso frequentata (ovviamente solo del periodo dell'obbligo) con molta riluttanza e scarsi risultati. These activities require a profound yes "culture", but the peasant who handed down from father to son and has no need of texts, of written or teachers in the common sense of the term. Unica notevole eccezione proprio il piccolo Michele Tosi, il quale, trapiantato in quel valido centro di studi che era il seminario di Bobbio, dimostrò ben presto le sue eccezionali doti intellettuali. L'intelligenza, l'acume, la volontà di don Tosi lo misero subito in luce prima in quel di Bobbio, poi nel contesto nazionale ed internazionale dove era ritenuto a ragione uno dei più profondi ed attenti studiosi della storia medioevale e di San Colombano. Archivista e paleografo di gran fama, fondò la rivista Archivum Bobiense , su cui sono apparsi approfonditi studi di eminenti studiosi italiani e stranieri sulle grandi figure del monachesimo medioevale. Il numero XVI-XVII della rivista, relativa agli anni 1994-1995 è dedicato interamente al tema "da S. Pietro in Ciel d'Oro alla Pieve di Alpepiana", cioè agli inizi della diffusione del Cristianesimo in Val d'Aveto. Non si tratta, come spesso è avvenuto ad opera di pseudo-studiosi passati e recenti, di una raccolta di favole e storielle messe insieme con molta fantasia per tracciare una storia "locale": qui si ha a che fare con uno studio che attinge direttamente alle fonti ed ai documenti dell'epoca e li riporta integralmente nel volume. Per far questo non sarebbe bastato uno studioso qualsiasi, ma occorreva veramente un esperto archivista e paleografo quale era don Tosi, perché per un profano le scritte ed i documenti antichi sono assolutamente indecifrabili. To do this would not be enough any a scholar, but to be truly an expert and archivist palaeography which was Don Tosi, because for a profane and the written documents are indecipherable ancient.
Detto questo sarebbe opportuno riportare ampi stralci dell'opera storica di don Tosi: è proprio questo che ci proponiamo di fare nei prossimi numeri. Having said that we should bring back large chunks of the historic Don Tosi is precisely what we intend to do in the next few numbers.
